The timeline for the Zelda series is hotly disputed, with many different theorys about the history of Hyrule, ranging from having everything in the order they came out in to having everything looping back on itself in order to fill plot holes.

   However, the most commonly accepted theory is the split timeline theory, created because of the time shifting dynamics in Ocarina of Time.

   Basically there is one path in the timeline up untill Ocarina of Time, where it splits. There are then two alternative timelines to follow, one where adult link existed and put everything right, and one where he never did, link went to termina and thus ganondorf gained control (theres a video up there explaining). Whilst this has little to no effect on the telling of the movie's plot as it is set before the split, it is notable that this is the generall timeline that it is based upon.

   This is a brief outline of the timeline events sorrounding the events of the Unification war, with timeline dates. Bear in mind that the name "Hyrule" didnt exist untill after Gustaf's time, but we'll use it for ease.

   2000BU- Creation  Yep, im sure we've all seen this before so many times in OoT, but here it is again. The 3 goddessess created the world and made order of the chaos that was the world, and left the triforce where they departed from its surface.

   1970BU-Races  The races of Hyrule started to develop, begining to live where theyre tribes would live for eternity.

   1900BU-Sages The sages of Hyrule were chosen by the goddessess, given powers, etc. They took it upon themselves to hide the triforce from the world, and deny its existance entirely so as too avoid any conflict between the races. They recorded everything there was to know about the triforce in the Book of Mudora, which they hid.

   1830BU-The wars begining Years later a young man was exploring the world when he found the book of mudora, and learnt of the power of the triforce. The sages did all they could to recall the book, and succeded, yet the man had already learnt of the power and the abilities it could bestow, and thus called together a group to search for it. Before long they started to betray each other in a selfish act to gain the power for themselves. The Unification war was imminent.

   1800DU- The Unification War As the group proceeded to try and find the great power, word spread of thier purpose and others started to wish for the Triforces powers. Soon, whole races of people started hunting for it, and not only that, but killing theyre own kind just to find the power first. This ensued into chaos, everyone was against each other in an "every man for himself" battle that no one could win. Populations plummeted, and the once beautiful kingdom was sweeped with a tide of blood.

   1700DU- The Shadow Time  A lost period of time. The time of the Interlopers, where dark magic was discoverd and its uses exploited. The Book of Mudora was again lost to the world, and remained so untill decades later. Races were wiped out entirly, whilst some dwindled on the very verge of extinction. Eventually the cause of the war was lost, people fought without knowing why. All knowledge of the causes were lost to the people of the world.

   1000DU- The Minish The Picori were against all the fighting, there wasnt even any reason to continue the war in theyre eyes, it was needless blood shed for a power that may not even exist! They began work on a mysterious sword, with plans for its use...

   400DU- Replenishment Races were dwindling, weapons were running out, people were dying of famin more than they were of the war lossess, and so the fighting came in waves more and more. Huge battles would happen up and down the kingdom, then calm whilst the races prepare for the next battle, then repeat.

   290DU- Beginning again People started to realise that the war was pointless, nothing was coming of it and few even knew of the Triforces existance at all. But the commanders were unwilling to stop the bloodshed, as the war was beyond just getting the Triforce for them now. It was a war for honour, and as such the battles continued.

   232DU- Gustaf  Gustaf, the future king of Hyrule, was born.

   217DU- The begining of the end (movie starts here) The Minish recognised Gustaf's incredible fighting techniques that had already won him through the ranks of the army he had become involved in, which later became known as the Hylian army. By using Gustaf's abilities in conjunction with the power of the Picori's sword they believed that they could stop the war and rebring peace to the kingdom. Gustaf became the first hero in green, and his abilities recognised through out the land.

   210DU- The end of the war Gustaf managed to stop the war, and called an agreement between the races of the kingdom in order to prevent this happening again. The Interlopers (later known as Twili as they adapted to theyre environment) were considerd untrustworthy, and so were sealed by the sages. Gustaf was crowned king of Hyrule (newly named after him) as a reward for saving the land, and layed the picori sword to rest. Whilst the majority of races were at peace, its important to note that not all accepted Gustafs ruling, and so in certain sections of the land the war would have effectivly continued, although no where near as widespread as previously.

   197AU- The rebuilding of Hyrule With the races at peace the kingdom was free to rebuild itself. Hyrule was the most prosperus it had been in centurys, the deaths of the war were starting to wash away and familys were begining to recover. Towns were newly built, and Hyrule was restored.

   177AU- Gustaf retires at an early age, and passess the throne onto his son, Daltus.  

   127AU- Gustaf passess away. He is buried in the Royal tomb.
